Basketball Anyone? This year's Fresh Coast Classic games were outstanding. They were more exciting than getting to throw a nine iron through the back window of your cheating spouse's car. Several games came down to the final seconds which provided the crowd with enough suspense that had the crowd been larger, it would have looked like a European soccer frenzy; more about the crowd later. We all recently learned how important seconds can be. They can be the difference of escaping and driving down the street or hitting a fire hydrant and then a tree. "Ouch." This year Clark Atlanta University upstaged defending champion, Elizabeth City University, in the championship game 58-56. Elizabeth City did not go quietly into the night as they lead most of the game. However they could not put away Clark Atlanta with any finality; it costs them in the end.

The crowd was, well, missing. Although the Fresh Coast Classic is an outstanding and worthwhile event providing our children with information and financial support for college, Milwaukee failed to support it. The crowd was missing like a baby is missing teeth. People will cite that it is a bad time to have this event due to the holiday or Black Friday. Yeah, I guess I forgot it is more important to shop for material things than to support the future of our youth. How silly of me.
Speaking of the future of our youth, the college fair was very well attended. Represented were Historically Black Colleges from across the country. Several college preparation workshops were held simultaneously, each filled, not leaving an empty seat in the room. Later, members of the Fresh Coast Classic Committee presented seven youths from our community with $500 scholarships.
As usual, the League of Martin was present at this worthwhile event. Members made sure that it was a peaceful and safe event.....mission accomplished.
